The weather continued to shine all weekend for our latest one-day meetings with several car clubs invited along with the motorbikes. This is usually the smallest entry weekend in our calendar and so it proved with around 100 cars each day and 40 from the NHCA with their solo bikes and sidecars/ trikes.
Within the car entry we attracted 15 Ferraris and 8 from the DEWS Minis each day plus our usual 40 Hagley members in the ‘Allswage’ Loton Park Championship. On Sunday, we added in 8 cars from the Morgan Sports Car Club and a couple of Jaguars from their Drivers Club.
On Saturday, the 1600cc Empire Evo single seater of Steve Morgan was the only one to get under the 50 second barrier with 49.69 seconds, followed by Dave Banner’s 50.23 in his OMS 28. Unfortunately, on Sunday Steve’s engine ‘dropped a valve’ in morning practice and retired, leaving Dave to set the best time at 49.69 seconds with Clive Austin’s 1070cc Empire Wraith close behind on 50.31. Within the Morgans, Simon Ashby set a new record in their up to 2000cc class at 62.05 seconds, beating the old record which had stood for 15 years. The hill record for the Ferrari class had been held by Jon Goodwin since 2011 but Nick Taylor eclipsed that with the final car run of the day in his 430 Coupe at 58.50 seconds.
Within the bikes, in the Top Ten run-off on Sunday Tom Short was the winner for the second day running, with a time of 55.20 seconds and this time now stands as the over 500cc engined class record.
Our next meetings are on Saturday/ Sunday 4/5th. August when we again run two one day events with several invited hillclimb championships including those for the TVR Car Club Speed series, the Classic Marques Speed Challenge and the Triumph TRs. We also include series from the Hillclimb and Sprint Association, Nottingham Sports Car Club, Midland Automobile Club and the Historic Rally Car Register.
