The weekend was all about the resurfaced hill

July 20, 2017

Since the British Championship meeting in June we have completely resurfaced the hill for the first time in over 20 years and all competitors and organisers were very apprehensive about how much grip there would or wouldn’t be, particularly as we had the motor bikes with us this weekend.

After a severe Clerk of the Course briefing on Saturday morning the first practice turned out to be rain affected with very mixed reports about grip levels. Later in the morning it turned much dryer and practice t

imes tumbled with some reporting personal best times and others attacking too hard and taking a more scenic route than planned, keeping our marshalling team busy, including much sweeping of the track. Unfortunately, this was the story all weekend with some competitors never learning and it continued until late on Sunday afternoon.

With 2 one-day National ‘B’ meetings including several invited championships on both days, we had received full entries and over 40 bikes and sidecar/ trikes on both days. We also had to fit in a break on Saturday lunchtime for the wedding of the daughter of one of our local supporters and on Sunday morning the 9.30 church service.

Although many competitors reported beating their best ever times on several occasions during the weekend, we only had one class record broken by Deryck Jones in Class 1B, recording 59.61 seconds in his Peugeot 205 GTi.  Alasdair Mercer set the best time of the day on Saturday in his supercharged Force at 49.82 seconds, whilst on Sunday it was John Stockley leading the way on 50.45 in his 998cc. OMS 2000M. Tommy Hodges was quickest of the bikes on both days with a best of 56.30 on Sunday and Ian Guy/ Jed Pilmoor Brady were the fastest sidecar/ trike on both days with a best time of 58.62.

Both days were very long and tiring for marshals and organisers alike with many delays for off-course excursions and car/ bike breakages but all competitors were full of praise for the new track surface and saying that they can’t wait to come back.
